ALBANY, NY – Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) is pleased to announce the new Executive Director of the Stack Family Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training (CBET). After an extensive search, the College chose Michelle Lewis, Ph.D., who started January 3, 2022, to advance the ongoing strategic development of CBET.
For the last seven years, Dr. Lewis served as the Assistant Director at the Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility at the University of Georgia which produces biological products for various academic and industrial clients. In this role, she was responsible for guiding business development through generation of new services and contributing to grants and funding opportunities; managing a team of staff scientists in protein purification, mammalian cell culture and monoclonal antibody discovery; and developing training for staff, students and visiting scientists through one-on-one mentoring, classes, workshops and summer internships.
Dr. Lewis also served as Assistant Director of the Vanderbilt High-throughput Screening Facility at Vanderbilt University where she developed cell-based assays for the discovery of novel small molecule therapeutics, ensured quality and throughput of downstream secondary assays, and implemented high-content data analysis for the identification of bioactive molecules. Additionally, she worked as a Senior Staff Scientist for the Diversa Corporation and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Johnson & Johnson.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Lewis leading CBET as we embark on the next phase of developing state-of-the-art labs to provide the biopharmaceutical industry the trained workforce it needs to continue to advance novel therapeutics,” said ACPHS President Dr. Greg Dewey.
The Stack Family Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training (CBET) is ACPHS’ response to the rapidly growing biopharmaceutical field and the need for an educated workforce, which has been cited as one of the critical constraints to growth of the biopharmaceutical industry. The Center will provide knowledge and hands-on experience to bring innovative biopharmaceuticals to patients. Located at the Albany NanoTech Complex, CBET is the first in the nation to be created by a pharmacy college. For more information, go to https://cbet.acphs.edu/.
