Albany students get paid for summer dose of pharmacy research

Donning blue lab coats at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Emily Ha and Dhimiter Cobani described their investigation into how lung cells respond to the influenza virus, especially pandemic flu strains.

They strike a listener as a good team. The professorial Cobani focuses his attention on the likelihood of an overreaction of the body's own defenses as a possible reason that younger, healthier adults are more frequently sickened during pandemic flus. Ha, with the demeanor of a public health official concerned about making her point clear, is fascinated by the patterns revealed in death statistics going back to the 1918 flu pandemic.

Neither of them knew any of this six weeks ago.
