Bachelor/Master of Science in Biotechnology-Cytotechnology
Description
The Bachelor’s/Master’s of Science in Biotechnology-Cytotechnology at Albany College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is a joint degree program that allows students to
pursue two degrees simultaneously, thereby receiving their master’s degree in five
years instead of six. The program integrates the biological sciences with the medical
sciences to give students the ability to enjoy successful careers as medical laboratory
professionals and/or scientific researchers.
Is this program for you?
The joint degree program in Biotechnology-Cytotechnology is ideal for recent high
school graduates interested in careers in laboratory diagnostics or biotechnology
research, and who are already considering an advanced degree. Students with the
appropriate pre-requisites from accredited institutions, as determined by ACPHS,
may transfer into the Biotechnology-Cytotechnology program in their junior or senior
year.
What are the job prospects for graduates with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
Biotechnology-Cytotechnology?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor projections, approximately 13,800 medical
laboratory professionals will be needed every year through 2012 to fill vacant positions.
Yet, fewer than 5,000 laboratory professionals are graduating each year from accredited
programs. These figures are part of the reason why the Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS) forecasts “rapid job growth and excellent job opportunities” for laboratory
professionals in the coming decade. It is also why, as of May 2008, the median salary
for clinical laboratory technologists is $53,500. Professionals who rise to the
level of a Clinical Laboratory Manager or a comparable position may earn salaries
in the range of $75,000 - $80,000.
